## Description

Role Purpose

The VDI / Server Engineer is responsible for designing, implementing and supporting virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI), Microsoft-based server platforms and end-user computing services. The role delivers secure, reliable and scalable virtual workspaces for users across the organisation, ensuring platform performance, availability and a consistent user experience.

  
Key Responsibilities

-   Design, implement and maintain VDI and virtual application platforms.
-   Manage virtual desktop images, application delivery, user profiles and policy configurations.
-   Manage VDI capacity, performance and availability to support a consistent user experience.
-   Integrate VDI services with identity, endpoint management, storage, networking and security platforms.
-   Implement secure configuration baselines and access controls.
-   Automate image creation, provisioning, configuration and maintenance activities.
-   Monitor VDI and Microsoft server platforms, investigating and resolving performance and availability issues.
-   Support patching, upgrades, platform migrations and lifecycle management.
-   Participate in incident, problem, change and major incident management.
-   Maintain technical documentation, design standards and operating procedures.
-   Collaborate with client engineering, network, security, storage and application teams.
-   Contribute to modernisation initiatives and continuous service improvement.

## Requirements

Skills and Experience

-   Strong experience in designing and supporting enterprise VDI and server environments.
-   Knowledge of virtual desktop, application virtualisation and profile management technologies.
-   Experience with virtualisation platforms and their storage and network dependencies.
-   In-depth knowledge of Citrix, Windows desktop and server operating systems, Active Directory and Group Policy.
-   Experience with endpoint management, identity integration and security controls.
-   Familiarity with desktop image management, application packaging and build automation.
-   Knowledge of monitoring, user experience analysis and performance optimisation.
-   Strong understanding of platform reliability, security, resilience and operational excellence.
-   Experience participating in incident, problem, change and lifecycle management.
-   Ability to document technical solutions and communicate effectively with technical and non-technical stakeholders.
-   A collaborative, improvement-focused and automation-oriented approach to engineering.
-   Commitment to continuous learning, professional development and relevant industry accreditations.

  
Qualifications and Professional Experience

-   Bachelor’s degree or equivalent professional experience.
-   Typically six to ten years of relevant experience, or demonstrable expertise appropriate to the role.

  
Desirable Experience

-   Experience with cloud-hosted or hybrid VDI solutions.
-   Understanding of Infrastructure as Code (IaC) and continuous integration and continuous delivery (CI/CD) concepts.
-   Experience coordinating the work of others or contributing to technical projects.
