## Description

**Junior Mechanical Engineer — Superior Motion Controls (Farmingdale, NY)**

**Internship leading to full-time** | **Long Island, New York** | **Up to $65,000 (internship)**

**About SMC**

Superior Motion Control is a precision machine shop and assembly operation based in Farmingdale, NY, supporting the U.S. Department of Defense and major prime contractors. We're a small team with significant responsibility — the parts and assemblies we deliver matter, and so does every engineer on the floor. SMC is part of IPC Foundry Group, and this role plays a key part in growing our engineering capacity for the next generation of programs.

**The role**

This is a paid summer internship structured as a working tryout for a full-time Mechanical Engineer position. Strong performers convert to full-time at the end of the summer. Both the internship and the full-time role are based on-site in Long Island, NY.

You'll come in working alongside our lead engineer, helping us tackle the volume of work. You'll get exposure to real DoD programs from day one and grow into design ownership as you ramp.

**What you'll do**

**Summer internship — focus on vendor packages and drawing work:**

- Compile and refine vendor packages for DoD contracts — drawings, models, specs, certifications
- Update legacy drawing packages and CAD models to current standards
- Coordinate with internal teams, vendors, and the shop floor to keep packages accurate and complete

**Full-time conversion — responsibilities expand into design and program work:**

- Back up our lead engineer across design, testing, machining, and mechanical assembly
- Support new program proposals and design work
- Build and test production and prototype components in our shop
- Develop and maintain process documentation, work instructions, and engineering standards

## Requirements

**What we're looking for**

- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field
- Proficiency in SolidWorks
- Solid grasp of GD&T, drawing interpretation, and basic machining processes
- Hands-on mechanical aptitude — comfortable assembling and testing physical components, not just modeling them
- A self-starter mindset with the ability to navigate ambiguity without stalling out

**Nice to have**

- Exposure to a precision machining or job-shop environment
- Familiarity with DoD or government contracting standards (MIL-specs, AMS, ASME)
- Electronics experience — not required, but useful

**Relocation and logistics**

For the summer internship, we provide relocation support to get you to Long Island, including travel and housing assistance during the trial period. Upon conversion to full-time, compensation and benefits will reflect the Long Island market, and you'll be responsible for your own permanent housing.

**Work schedule**

- Full-time, on-site in Long Island, NY
- Monday–Friday, day shift

**Benefits**

- Relocation assistance and housing support during the summer internship
- Paid time off
- Health insurance
- 401(k) with matching
