## Description

### Safety Professional – Advanced Light Source Upgrade (ALS-U)

**Location:** Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) – Berkeley, CA
**Project:** Advanced Light Source Upgrade (ALS-U)
**Contract Environment:** U.S. Department of Energy (DOE)

### Position Overview

We are seeking an experienced **Safety Professional** to support the Advanced Light Source Upgrade (ALS-U) Project at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory.

The Safety Professional will work as an integrated member of the ALS-U safety organization, supporting safety management across project planning, design, procurement, fabrication, installation, testing, commissioning, operational readiness, and project closeout.

This position requires hands-on experience identifying and evaluating workplace and project hazards, developing effective controls, supporting Work Planning and Control (WPC), performing field safety oversight, reviewing technical and engineering documentation, and maintaining compliance with applicable DOE, LBNL, and ALS-U safety requirements.

Experience supporting large construction or complex technical projects within a DOE, nuclear, accelerator, research laboratory, or similarly regulated environment is strongly preferred.

### Key Responsibilities

- Support implementation and continuous improvement of project safety programs.
- Perform safety program assessments and evaluate project safety practices.
- Identify and evaluate industrial, construction, electrical, radiological, lead, hazardous-material, and other project-specific hazards.
- Perform hazard assessments and risk evaluations.
- Develop engineering, administrative, and work-practice controls to mitigate identified hazards.
- Develop and/or review Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs), Activity Hazard Documents (AHDs), and related work-planning documentation.
- Verify that required hazard controls and mitigation measures are incorporated into work planning and field execution.
- Perform Work Planning and Control activities, including review of work packages, readiness verification, and coordination with technical organizations.
- Conduct field observations, safety walkthroughs, and assessments of changing work conditions.
- Support fabrication, construction, equipment installation, testing, and commissioning activities.
- Review lifting and rigging activities, electrical safety requirements, fall protection, confined-space activities, and contractor safety practices.
- Participate in engineering and design reviews to evaluate safety considerations.
- Review engineering drawings, design packages, specifications, installation plans, test procedures, operational procedures, and temporary work plans.
- Support compliance with applicable federal, DOE, Laboratory, and project safety requirements.
- Participate in project readiness and operational readiness reviews.
- Review incidents and near misses and support root-cause evaluations, corrective actions, lessons learned, and safety-performance improvements.
- Develop, review, and revise safety procedures, safety plans, hazard analyses, engineering evaluations, technical memoranda, compliance documentation, and technical reports.
- Support DOE reviews, independent assessments, and project oversight activities.
- Coordinate closely with ALS-U management, Engineering, EH&S, Radiation Protection, Facilities, technical teams, contractors, and other LBNL organizations.

## Requirements

S**enior safety resource with demonstrated safety-management experience on large construction or complex technical projects governed by DOE O 413.3B or comparable requirements.**

- DOE or national laboratory environments
- Large capital construction or complex technical projects
- Nuclear or accelerator facilities
- Radiological safety
- Industrial and construction safety
- Lead and hazardous-material hazards
- Work Planning and Control (WPC)
- Hazard identification, assessment, and mitigation
- Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs)
- Activity Hazard Documents (AHDs)
- Field safety oversight
- Regulatory and DOE compliance
- Operational/readiness reviews
- Safety documentation and technical reporting

### Ideal Candidate

Comfortable operating at both the **programmatic and field level**—capable of evaluating safety programs and technical documentation while also walking active work areas, identifying changing conditions, verifying controls, and coordinating corrective actions with engineering, construction, EH&S, and project leadership.

This role supports the Advanced Light Source Upgrade, a major upgrade to LBNL's existing accelerator and photon-delivery infrastructure.
