## Description

Reporting to the Manager, Program Operations, the Surface Operator is responsible for operating machinery on a daily basis to ensure that the playing surfaces meet or exceed a high standard for all user groups (e.g. guests, customers and the public). The Surface Operator supports the recreational facilities by ensuring that all facility areas are clean, healthy, and are considered safe environments for all. Other functions include the cleaning and maintenance of the playing surface; assisting with the sports Facility; and the set-up and take down for public and private functions. 

**WHAT YOU WILL DO** 

1\. Conducts thorough and proper surface install and maintenance by: 

-   Preparing the facility for multi-surface installation which will include ice, turf, and hard courts. 

-   Conducting regular surface checks, that will include all playing surfaces on campus.  

-   Ensuring conservation measures are followed and identifying and controlling risks. 

-   Tracking and maintaining surface equipment and supplies. 

-   Performing regular maintenance checks on various playing surface equipment. 

-   Operating and maintaining various playing surface equipment including but not limited to surface painting. 

-   Assisting in removal and installation of ice surface; converting play surface areas for dry-floor events. 

2\. As a member of REAL’s Surface Operators Team, this position is responsible for maintaining arena facilities for cleanliness of playing surfaces by:  

-   Ensuring the maintenance of acceptable standards for cleanliness according to departments service standards/goals and objectives. 

-   Inspecting arena boards, cleaning glass, field cleaning, and making emergency and general repairs that are required throughout our sport facilities. 

-   Inspecting the glass, netting, and ensuring proper documentation of repairs. 

-   Ensuring the facilities are locked and secured when not in use.  

-   Performing a safety and security check of the facilities on a daily basis. 

-   Ensuring all doors and light fixtures are safe and in good repair and operationally functioning. 

-   Identifying, documenting and reporting any damage, vandalism or graffiti immediately. 

-   Setting up and taking down for events in the building as per service orders including: identifying and troubleshooting maintenance problems, performing emergency repairs, following up on work requests with manager and following established preventive maintenance repairs. 

-   Reporting fire or medical emergencies immediately. 

-   Maintaining records. 

-   Assisting in performance of general repairs and maintenance. 

-   Assisting the Fixed Assets and Maintenance, and Grounds and Conversion team in the maintenance of plumbing and heating systems and other duties, on an as needed basis. 

3\. Performing other duties as defined.

**Wage: $20.56 -$20.94/hour**

WORKING ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS**

-   Hours may vary based on operation requirements 

-   Freedom of movement, walking, standing; is required to be physically mobile, climb up/down stairs, and walk long distances for extended periods during events 

-   Frequently exposed to colder conditions, arenas, outside weather conditions. 

-   Exposed to fumes, airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals and vibration. 

-   Works in high, precarious places e.g.; ladder climbing. 

-   Occasional exposure to risk of electrical shock. 

-   Must be physically able to operate a variety of equipment as required. 

-   Push and pull force (up to 50 kg). 

-   Stand up lifting (up to 50 kg). 

-   Weight carry (up to 50 kg). 

-   Overhead lift/pull down (up to 50 kg) 

-   Frequent overhead reaching, forward reaching, stooping, repetitive bending, walking, sitting, balance, eye/hand coordination, neck range of motion 

-   Moderate simple and firm grasping of objects 

-   May work odd or long hours at a time to complete operational requirements, projects or to participate in or coordinate evening and off-hour activities.

## Requirements

**WHAT IT TAKES**

-   Grade 12 or a combination of relevant education, training and experience. 
-   Lv. 1 Ice Making is considered an asset. 
-   Refrigeration Operator Ticket is considered an asset.  
-   Previous experience in performing the function of ice making and sport surface maintenance is  asset.  
-   Experience in multi-tasking and working in a fast-paced environment. 
-   Must possess and maintain a Valid Class 5 Saskatchewan Provincial driver’s license. 
-   Available to workdays, events, nights and weekends. 
-   Must be able to obtain and maintain a satisfactory Criminal Record Check for the duration of employment. 

**Knowledge, Skills and Abilities**

-   Ability to work well in a fast-paced environment, and adapt to change 

-   Ability to operate various playing surface equipment & Scissor lift is an asset.   

-   Knowledge of ice making, and sport surface maintenance is an asset. 

-   Knowledge of labour code, work standards and occupational health and safety regulations. 

-   Ability to work independently.  

-   Ability to operate various playing surface equipment & Scissor lift is an asset.   

-   Proven knowledge and experience of WHIMIS program is an asset.  

-   Excellent interpersonal and communication skills and ability to work well as part of a team 

-   Strong decision making skills required 

-   Ability to work cooperatively and effectively with others
