## Description

Space Inch is looking for an **Engineering Engagement Lead** to look after our engineers within a long-standing partnership with **one of the largest investment managers in the U.S, who is a S&P 500 company**. Our engineers work embedded in the client’s teams, and the client directs their day-to-day work. Your job is everything around that work: making sure each engineer meets Space Inch’s standards, understanding what they’re building and why it matters to the client’s business, helping them grow, and keeping communication clear between our people and the client.

This is a **people, communication, and account role**, which means that you won’t assign tasks, run sprints, or make architecture decisions. An engineering background is a preference, but it’s not a disqualifying criteria. **What really matters is an engineer’s mindset**: you can sit down with an engineer or a client’s engineering manager, understand what’s being built, and have a real conversation about it.

**Our mission, vision, and values**

At Space Inch, we prioritize alignment with our clients and team, ensuring a deep understanding of their needs. We are committed to delivering exceptional work while supporting the personal and professional growth of our team members.

**Working at Space Inch**

- Our remote-first team of around 80+ people is based across the EU (mostly Croatia), the US, and Latin America, with a growing presence in Brazil.
- Occasional travel for client visits and company retreats.
- This role is embedded within a single long-standing client partnership, though you'll draw on Space Inch's broader engineering community and practices.
- We support work/life balance for our team.

## Requirements

- **Experience**: 10+ years in engineering and people leadership, engagement or account management, or technical project/product management in an agency, consultancy, nearshore, or client-embedded environment; preferably coming from an engineering background, but not a must.
- **An engineer’s mindset**: you understand modern software development (SDLC, common architectures and stacks) well enough to follow what engineers are building, hold your own with client engineering and product managers, and notice when something is off. You don’t need to write code.
- **Real curiosity about the client’s business**: you invest the time to learn the domain, why each application matters, and what workflow it replaces, so client stakeholders see you as someone who adds value.
- **A clear system for evaluating people**: you can explain how you know someone is doing a great job, using standards, evidence, and feedback from several sources, and how you turn that into specific, actionable coaching.
- **Exceptional communicator and mediator** who handles sensitive topics (compensation, retention, disengagement, underperformance) directly and with care, across written, async, live, and cross-cultural communication.
- Proven track record of **growing engineers**: you’ve guided engineers along their career paths, from junior to senior and from individual contributor toward leadership, built development plans that led to real promotions, and can point to people who grew under your leadership.
- **Experience managing senior client stakeholders**: gathering honest feedback, managing expectations, and showing the value our people bring.
- **Practical fluency with AI as a working tool**: you can assess whether engineers are using AI well against defined practices and push them to improve.
- Experience leading distributed or remote people, including those who work mostly on their own.

**Key responsibilities**

- **Evaluation against our standards**: Regularly assess every engineer and project against Space Inch’s project success standards, and whether we’re meeting both the client’s needs and our team members’ needs.
- **Client feedback loop**: Work with the client’s engineering and product managers to gather feedback on each engineer, including quality of work, taking into account how each client team operates.
- **Coaching and growth**: Run regular 1:1s, give candid feedback, and build development plans that help engineers level up. Work with Engineering Leads, who coach informally, to round out evaluations.
- **Retention and connection**: Keep engineers engaged and connected to Space Inch, especially those working alone on client projects. Spot retention risks early and resolve them.
- **Coaching and career growth**: Run regular 1:1s, give candid feedback, and build development plans tied to Space Inch’s career paths. Identify engineers who are ready for the next level, build their promotion cases, and support those moving toward leadership roles. Work with Engineering Leads, who coach informally, to round out evaluations.
- **Account management**: Act as Space Inch’s senior point of contact with the client on how our people are doing; manage expectations and help tell the story of the impact of our work.
- **Facilitating communication**: Help engineers navigate shifting priorities, unclear ownership, and unrealistic timelines, and bridge communication gaps between our team and the client.
- **AI practice**: Check that engineers follow the AI practices we define, help them improve, and share what works across the team.

**Typical challenges you’ll be solving**

- Understanding a wide range of client applications well enough that client managers take your input seriously.
- Keeping engineers who work individually within client teams motivated and connected to Space Inch.
- Helping engineers handle a fast-changing client environment: shifting priorities, unclear ownership, and tight deadlines.
- Growing engineers’ careers when the client directs their daily work, and making their progress visible enough to support promotions.
- Turning feedback from engineers, Engineering Leads, and client managers into fair, specific evaluations and coaching.
- Raising the bar on how the team uses AI, measured by outcomes rather than adoption for its own sake.

**Qualities for success**

- Strong people instincts: engineers trust your guidance, feel supported in 1:1s, and are honest with you about what isn’t working.
- Adapts communication style across coaching, difficult conversations, and client discussions.
- A systems thinker who builds repeatable ways to evaluate and grow people, and spots broken communication loops before they escalate.
- Comfortable making decisions and owning the outcome, even when the first attempt fails.
- Calm under client pressure, and doesn’t pass that pressure to the team.

**The role is right for you if**

- You lead through trust, conversation, and presence, and you enjoy helping people get better at what they do.
- You like learning how a business works and connecting people’s work to what the client actually needs.
- You enjoy building a clear system for evaluating and developing people, and refining it over time.
- You find it rewarding when someone you’ve coached takes the next step in their career.
- You’re comfortable in a setup where the client directs the day-to-day work and your impact comes through people and relationships.

**The role is not right for you if**

- You want to run delivery, assign work, or own a product roadmap.
- You want a primarily hands-on engineering role.
- You aren’t interested in learning the client’s business in depth.
- You’d rather wait for direction than propose a way forward.

**What’s in it for you**

- Work closely with leadership on one of Space Inch’s most important client partnerships.
- Shape how Space Inch evaluates, develops, and supports engineers in client-embedded work.
- Leadership team that values people-first thinking and technical excellence.
- Remote-friendly, collaborative, pragmatic culture.

**Compensation & Benefits**

- **Monthly salary**: 6,500.00–9,000.00 USD for a full-time B2B collaboration, based on experience and skills
- **Remote-first setup**
- **Health & Wellbeing**: PTO + 100% paid sick leave + annual health checkup budget
- **Stay active**: Wellness subsidy
- **Continuous Growth**: An education budget specifically designed to fuel your learning and help you expand your knowledge base.
