The AUSL Teacher Residency Resident Teacher position is a one-year training position that provides a training stipend, financial aid, and reduced tuition cost to become a full-time teacher. This position is for career changers looking for an accessible opportunity to become a full-time teacher.

The AUSL Teacher Residency is a nationally recognized, one-year teacher training program that helps career changers and recent graduates earn their Illinois teaching license and work in traditionally underrepresented schools. Since 2003, AUSL has prepared more than 1,600 resident teachers through a proven cohort model, graduate‑level coursework, and in‑classroom experience alongside mentor teachers.

As a resident teacher, you will:

-   **Earn a master’s degree from DePaul University** in just one year at a reduced tuition cost

-   **Gain 1,000+ hours of classroom experience** with a supportive mentor teacher

-   **Receive one‑on‑one coaching and feedback** from expert educators

-   **Access a $22,100 training stipend** to offset tuition or living costs

-   **Join a close‑knit cohort** of aspiring teachers who train and grow together

-   Train for one full school year alongside a mentor teacher in the classroom in local public school districts including District 89, District 103, and Chicago Public Schools

-   Take courses at DePaul University and graduate with a master’s degree in education

-   Receive a $22,100 stipend that can be used for personal finances or to pay for tuition

-   Qualify to work in a classroom as a full‑time teacher and commit to working in an underserved school for four years after graduation

Qualifications

-   Bachelor’s Degree at the start of the program

-   GPA of 2.75 on a 4.0 scale

-   U.S. Citizen, national, or permanent resident

Scholarship and Financial Aid

-   AUSL provides a $22,100 resident teacher stipend paid directly to you. Use this living allowance to pay for tuition costs or cover living costs during your training year.

-   Additional grants such as the TEACH Grant and Segal Award are available to reduce your program cost.

-   Resident teachers may qualify for partial tuition cost forgiveness through FAFSA Loan Forgiveness depending on your chosen content area.
