## Description

Habitat Energy is a fast growing technology company focussed on the physical and financial optimisation of energy storage and renewable generation assets globally through complex models and trading. By maximising the returns from these assets we aim to drive investment in renewable energy and accelerate the transition to a low carbon world. Our rapidly growing team of 130+ people in Austin, TX, Oxford, UK, and Melbourne, Australia brings together exceptionally talented and passionate people in the domains of energy trading, data science, software engineering and renewable energy management.

We have a vacancy for a DevOps Engineer to join our Tech team based in Melbourne. This is a hands-on role. We aren't looking for an architect who stands back; we need someone who loves getting stuck into the code, configuring infrastructure, and getting their hands dirty. You will need to be pragmatic about technology-choosing the right tool for the job. At Habitat we mostly use open-source solutions to maintain architectural flexibility, and some third party managed services.

You will report to the Head of Software (Australia) and the DevOps Lead (International). While you will lead the charge on our Australian infrastructure, including a major migration from ECS to Kubernetes, you will also contribute to our global platform and participate in a "follow the sun" on-call rotation.

**What you’ll be doing:**

Cloud infrastructure management

- Leading the Migration: You will be "hands-on" in moving our Australian services from AWS ECS to Kubernetes (EKS).

Tool selection and architectural standards + Data & platform security

- Building Global Infrastructure: Writing and maintaining Infrastructure as Code (Terraform) across local and international regions.

Data & platform security

- Connecting Assets: Managing secure networking and VPN connections (IPSec and Wireguard) to ensure our systems talk securely to remote battery sites.

Applications

- Optimising Pipelines: Improving CI/CD (GitHub Actions, ArgoCD) to help our Software and Data Science teams ship faster.

Cloud infrastructure management

- Reducing Costs: Working with our Software and Data Science teams to make our infrastructure smaller and more efficient.

Applications

- Thinking Critically: Identifying bottlenecks, suggesting improvements, and experimenting—not just maintaining the status quo.

## Requirements

**About You**

- We don't believe in long checklists of requirements. We are looking for the right kind of engineer. You’ll be a good fit if:

- You have a "Builder" Mindset: You enjoy digging into the code and solving problems. You care about how things work under the hood.

- You know Kubernetes: You have exposure to K8s (EKS), Helm, and Docker. Experience with ECS is a bonus (so you can help us move away from it!).

- You speak Terraform: You are comfortable definAbouting infrastructure as code.

- You understand Networking: You know your way around VPNs (IPSec/Wireguard) and VPC security.

- You are Pragmatic: You know AWS (EC2, RDS, S3), but you don't use a tool just because it's there. You evaluate the best solution for the problem.

- You are Collaborative: You can communicate with Data Scientists and Software Engineers, and you're happy to sync with international colleagues (occasionally early/late) to keep the global team aligned.

Ultimately we are looking for someone who is a great fit for our company so we encourage you to apply even if you may not meet every requirement in this posting. We value diversity and our environment is supportive, challenging and focused on the consistent delivery of high quality, meaningful work.

In return, we’ll give you a competitive salary, flexible working arrangements and a lot of personal development opportunities. We operate a hybrid working model with at least 2 - 3 days in our office in Melbourne.

When you apply for a job with us, we process some of your personal information. You can find out more about how we process your information on our company website: https://habitat.energy/privacy-policy/.
